 Community Impact Advisory Board

is a community panel intentionally representative of the rich diversity of Atlanta’s LGBTQ and allied communities. Its purposes are to:

(1) make recommendations for grant awards from The ATLANTA Gay & Lesbian Community FOUNDATION Community Impact Fund; (2) provide advice throughout the process on structure, processes, and policies.

Members are recruited on a rolling basis in order to give them input to all aspects of designing and implementing the community impact grants program.

The Foundation is committed to recruiting a diverse membership representative of the full community.  Learn more by reading our fact sheet.

The ATLANTA Gay & Lesbian Community FOUNDATION empowers donors, helps nonprofit organizations get results, meets local needs, and builds an inclusive community. It works through donor-advised funds, community impact grants, philanthropic education, and technical assistance in all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied communities in metropolitan Atlanta.

The Community Impact Grant Fund is like a LGBTQA “community chest,” a fund available to address unmet community needs or emergency events on a years-long, annual, or ad-hoc basis. When operational, Community Impact Grants will be made at the recommendation of the Community Impact Advisory Board, a panel of community members, after review of requests from qualified 501(c) (3) organization(s) working in the LGBTQA community.

Simplified Giving.  The ATLANTA Gay & Lesbian Community FOUNDATION will handle all administration and record-keeping for Community Impact Grants thus simplifying gift administration for the nonprofit grantee.

Focused Giving.  Community Impact Grants allow the community to focus needed resources on unmet needs, collaborative initiatives, and urgent events or issues (such as assistance for a hate-crime victim for example.) Community Impact Grants give small donors the chance to leverage their generosity and move local nonprofits to nondiscrimination, vigorous program evaluation, real collaboration, and other best practices.

Enhanced Giving.  Community Impact Grants allow the community to accumulate monies to make a large impact or distribute funds broadly to maximize diverse approaches. Couples, neighbors, circles of friends, co-workers, etc. can magnify their giving by pooling resources to create a fund tailored to their interests through The ATLANTA Gay & Lesbian Community FOUNDATION.  In addition, donors can give with greater confidence because all grant awards are expected to include requirements for realistic and clear outcome measurements from the grantees.

Flexibility.  Some needs emerge quickly; others are highly time-constrained. A Community Grant ensures that community members have flexibility in addressing such needs without the added burden of setting up an entirely new nonprofit with state and federal documentation and insurance requirements. All this is handled by The ATLANTA Gay & Lesbian Community FOUNDATION.

DID YOU KNOW?

A January 2008 survey of Atlanta opinion leaders showed near unanimity on the need for a new organization to address unmet community needs. By large majorities, local opinion leaders support the idea of an organization for pooling donations and for promoting both community philanthropy and standards of nonprofit excellence.
